1. The key experiment that led to the discovery of quantum mechanics was the seeming paradox called the ultraviolet catastrophe. Classical mechanics had no explanation for it. Quantum mechanics proved that the ultraviolet catastrophe would not occur because energy is quantized, not continuous. Subsequent experiments, including Young's two-slit experiment that demonstrated complementarity and the Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen experiment that violated Bell's Inequality Theorem and proved the existence of entanglement were also quintessential quantum experiments with no possible classical explanation.
